I tried this approach but couldn't get the brake retainer spring to stay in one piece. The retainer is spring steel and once it's been heated (welded) the heated area becomes soft and brittle (no longer spring steel). It kept breaking at the thinnest point nearest the weld. Just my experience YMMV.

I took off the clip and had about .25 of an inch welded on to the back of it. Then I went at it with a grinder in teh front and took about .15th off of it and it doesent hit at all, even with new pads..
