Hi Dave,
My car is going into Autobahn (Hexham, Northumberland) on Monday for the chain doing. I mentioned you and they remembered. I'm having it serviced at the same time. I hope the chain job is around 1000 like they said (incl. parts). They are going to strip it down and see what parts need ordering. This means they will keep the car for around a week or so. I think that this will put my mind at ease.
By the way, its probably worth pointing out to people on this board that your chain was knackered when they removed it. Maybe a new tensioner could never be good enough under the circumstances.

I have never heard of a chain snapping, I know of a car were the chain jumped. I prefer preventative maintanence thats why mine hase been done at 76K miles.
I paid 1000 for the full job I know have no startup noise (use to sound like a deisel engine for upto 5 minutes).
The car runns a lot smoother because the valve timing will be slightly out if the chain is slack.
If John W still reads this board he will confirm what i am saying because he has seen and driven my car his works "the engine feel like new".
remmember its better to pay 1000 - 2000 for a new chain than 4K for a rebuild.
I don't belive the crap about 100K miles do the job. I think if you replace the tensioner and it does not cure the noise the look at the full job as in my case.

just my thoughts

And how can I tell if it needs changing. I don't get any unusual rattles or starting problems.

Thanks.
