Comparing apples to oranges? You said "the 320 is lighter than the E30". Look in the 3 Series Enthusiast`s Companion for the E30 318 (1984). That`s the one with similar running gear. It shows 2360 to 2395 lbs. You can`t compare two chassis with two different engines (yes, the S14 weighs more than an M10). I still contend that if you put all the stuff on your E21 that the M3 has (brakes, larger differential, stronger gearbox, etc.) it will be heavier than the M3.
The 3 series companion published in 2001 says the E21 curb weight is an even 2500 lbs while the american version E30 M3 weighs in at a curb weight of 2865 lbs
