At that time there was not really a sort of World touring car championship, al european countries had different rules. The best was the DTM (german championship) with at the end much more flexible rules (lower production volumes, very high budgets), better than Grp A which was the FIA international class. The M3 was specially designed by the BMW motorsports department to win this DTM. But in the early days of the DTM we were also running Ford Siera Cosworth's RS500(2ltr.turbo 550hp), over the years these cars got smaller inlet restrictors to give N/A cars a change. A bit the same as in Australia were they were running Nissan skyline's and Siera Cossie's with 600+hp.
