Well, the steering has been getting gradually stiff on my 84 318i with about 250,000 miles on the car. Ok at center but gets harder to turn the more the wheel is turned (both directions). Also, does not come back to center smoothly. For a while, it would get gradually better the longer i drove.
Will check the steering joint that connects the steering column to the rack. Last time i looked the rack over it was in good shape (no boot tears, no fluid leaks, alignment was recently done). If the joint looks to be in good shape, i will go ahead and replace the steering pump (have a spare).
Other ideas, suggestions for testing and trouble shooting appreciated.
