It is not the standard BMW clutch rattle. I wish it were. I never owned a BMW that did not rattle with the exception of one with A/T. I have been driving this car for over three years and have several years around E-30's, M3 and otherwise. While not a professional BMW technician, I have twisted wrenches on BMW's for quite a while as a hobby. This noise is new to me and not regular S-14 noise. You are correct they are noisy compared to the 6 cylinder with a timing belt or the newer engines. I have the usual DOHC valve tapping and other S-14 noises. This one worries me. It does not sound like piston slap or bearing rattle or a wrist pin. Maybe a valve spring broke. Can a tensioner just quit tensioning altogether? Thanks for your response.
