Concours on Sunday - what about the Cosmoline? (archive)

I recall something posted about removing cosmoline from the engine - what are your thoughts? I seem to recall something about brake cleaner or brake fluid.

I have it on the valve cover and would like to clean it up. What can I use? Will it harm the black paint on the engine?
