Does it sound kind of like a diesel engine? If so, it's the tensioner. If you replace it with the E36 M3 tensioner the noise should disappear and you ought to be fine.

when I first start my car up, warm or cold, the valves will be fairly loud, but after about a minute or so, they will get quiet...can this be solved by a valve adjustement?
