I had a similar problem. The idle would sometimes jump to about 1500 or so and then slowly come back down to normal. Other times, the car just stalled.

For me, my problem was caused by the idle control valve beginning to stick a little when it tried to adjust the air flow.

I've been working on my project e30 and just started it up yesterday. First time in about a week or so. It was idling at about 1300 or so, I reved it a few times and it stayed around 12 even after it was warmed up, I put it in gear and drove in around my driveway and after when idling the rpm drops to about 600 and jumps to 1300 and keeps repeating this.. I have no idea what this is.. hopefully nothing serious. I started it up today and it did the same thing.. Its almost out of fuel, on empty, i dunno if that has anythign to do with it..

Thanks guys.
JP
