If it smells like oil is burning on the exhaust then it may be coming from the back of the engine. The cam carrier has a little plate that fits on. If this is not sealing properly oil can run out onto to the exhaust.
Note that leak 2 seems to be coming from slightly around the corner (the side we can`t see in the pic) and it is dripping down to the water pump). It seems to be just seeping through and then running along the little ledge to the front of the engine.
Yeah I could see the tensioner(leak 1), that`s the part sticking out to the passenger side with a little red cap on the end right? It did get damp under there when I ran the engine for a while but it could be getting there from above where it appears to be coming from.
Need to get this sorted at some point because sometimes I can smell the oil burning when I`m driving especially if I give it some welly for a while. I will try to tighten the bolt near the dist.cap up and see what happens there. As for leak 2.....hmmmmmmmmm. THe car is due for a service soon so I think then will be a good time to get the whole underside of the engine cleaned up and then see if we can find out more about this.
Cam carrier & head are the missing parts. Your oil leak could be coming from the timing chain cover, the nature of these engines mean that you do need to spanner check them regularly. Alternatively the leak could be coming from the timing chain tensioner.
What are the three layers of the engine?
So the cam cover is bolted down to the ****** Then this part is bolted down to another part called the ******? THen finally there is the block right?
Sorry for my dumbness :). But I am trying to locate an oil leak and visually by looking from above I think there are two leaks from the front of the engine. One looks like it is coming from just below where the distrubutor is (where the first engine layer joins the 2nd part - looks like its coming from around the bolt next to the distrubutor), but I`m not 100% sure because the trail of oil actually goes above the bolt but this could be engine movement - I dont think it`s coming from the cam cover.
The second one is coming from just above where the oil pump is (I think it`s the oil pump) which I assume is the head gasket area -where the 2nd engine layer joins the block.
Hopefully my descriptions aren`t too bad 8-). If I find an pic I`ll post it and highlight the areas.
Is this likely to be a head problem :(
