Is your cooling system in top notch shape??
You might have faulty pressure cap or a leak in the system. This would also cause the same problems. Finally, there is a tiny little hose on top of the engine which connects the metal tubing for the overflow take. Mine was leaking causing the overheating problem while stopped in traffic.

when I am driving around town the temp gauge goes almost all the way to the red. Once I get on the highway and air is coming in from the front it cools back down.

What could be causing this?
