aux. fan sorting questions (archive)

I am trying to sort out my aux fan so it will work properly. I tested the fan and it does work. Now what wires do I jump at the theremostat to see if the resistor is bad or the t.stat itself is bad. is it the 2 wire or 3 wire t.stst that runs the aux fan. Also, isn't there a inexpensice resistor at radio shack that will work for this appIication? know this area has been disscussed sooooo many times but I can remember the details. Thanks for any help, Chris
