Kim: I own a 95 M3 and a 97 M3/4. The M3's my wife and I use as our daily drivers and on the track. My children will tell you that the car is blast to drive around town and through the twisties, but gets a little tedious on long trips.
I also own and 850CSi that I use on long trips, but is just as fun through the twisties. It just takes a little more concentration.

You need to test drive both. Check your needs and your driving pattern. Whatever car you choose you will still look forward to driving anywhere. If cost is a factor, the maintenance and replacement parts of the 850 are without doubt more expensive than the M3.
