(To be precise, the 850i was fitted with the M7B50 engine displacing 5.0 liters and the 850Ci was fitted with the M73B54 engine displacing 5.4 liters.) The 840s all displaced about 4 liters using a V-8 powerplant. (the engine code escapes me this morning.) Again, this number is not exact as BMW frequently figures "close enough" when it come to the last two digits of model designations.

I may not be an expert on the E31, but I do know that the V12 had a displacement of 5.0 liters all the way to 1994 (inclusive), and in 1995 it reached 5.4 liters (the CSi being excluded in my statement here). So your statement about the E31 revamp to the "Ci" desgnation in 1993 (and the supposed 5.4 liter engine) is grossly incorrect, the 1993 V12 was still 5.0 liters. The same is the case with the V12 in the 750iL, 5.0 liters until 1994, then in 1995, 5.4 liters.
Also, not all 840s were 4.0 liters (about), the 840 displaced 4.0 liters in 1994 and 1995, in 1996 it was bumped to 4.4 liters; just like the 740i/iL and 540i went from 4.0 to 4.4, from 1995 to 1996. Did you by chance hear about the Alusil vs. Nikalsil problems with the V8?
