: Uh, SU, he's technically correct. The Ci was fitted with the M73 motor. Paul merely neglected to state which model year. And yes, the M70 motor was continued into 1994. Probably a late night oversight on his part.

: See, he's busy with a day job and donates his valuable time to moderating the excellent E31 list. And no, he doesn't proclaim to be a know-it-all about the E31. He only provides moderation and occassionally some well-placed and pithy comments.

: Okay, bud, riddle me this:

: List five differences between the M70 and M73. Name some, and you can join the secret ranks of E31 technical literati.

: Mark
: 1992 E31M70B50

: P.S. - Paul knows!

Paul wrote in the first paragraph:

"To be precise, the 850i was fitted with the M7B50 engine displacing 5.0 liters and the 850Ci was fitted with the M73B54 engine displacing 5.4 liters."

Then in the third paragraph:

"My theory is that when they revamped the 850i in 1993 they had to call it *something*
different, so they fell back to 850Ci"

Putting these two quotes together (or even taking the first at face value), it would seem that the 1993 850Ci has a 5.4 liter V12 powerplant. This is misleading in that the 5.4 did not exist in 1993 when the change-over to the Ci designation took place. Yes, I know that the 850Ci (at varoius points in its life) was home to both the 5.0 and 5.4. It is incorrect to say that all 850Ci's have the 5.4. Would you argree? Good.

And, you glossed over the mistake about the V8. Too bad you do not have a reply for that.

Next point:

I do appreciate people who freely give thier time to mailing lists and such (as I do, too). But to be a moderator, he *should* have more knowledge than the average owner (certainly a know-it-all is not necessary).

Last:

"Name some, and you can join the secret ranks of E31 technical literati."

Your little riddle is amusing, as being an owner of a few BMW 7ers, I know the difference between the V12s. Mark, you should know that the 750 (i/iL) and 850 (i, Ci, whatever) have always shared powerplants (except the Csi <-- see that's being accurate). I really hope that you are looking for more in-depth differences than: horsepower, torque, displ, mass, EMS, years manuf., common faults. Please, let us not get into nit picking here.

This should not qualify me into the "E31 technical literati", because this is *engine* specific knowledge, not *platform* specific, understand?

If you would like to continue playing riddles, contact me privately, as I'm sure this idea will be a waste of valuable board space.

Regards,
SU
