Offering experience...
the car that I was originally interested in was being sold as a "CSi"... that is what initially attracted my attention. Luckily, the E31 forum and owner's list clarified this scam before I closed the deal. When I confronted the seller, he claimed that he, "didn't really know the difference," and just called it a CSi because he thought it stood for (C)oupe (S)port (i)njected.
After needling him for a while, he admitted a large part of his confusion stemmed from the (S)port mode selector on the transmission.
However... after researching the car (in order to find out if it was a CSi), I found that the guy that was selling the car REALLY didn't know what he was selling. heheh. Poor bastard. Perhaps it was his own deserved Karma coming back to kick him in the rear for trying the CSi scheme.
I just wanted to add to PMB's post and emphasize the prevalence of this scheme. However... don't discredit the poor vehicle just because the seller is typical used-car-salesman... you never know what you are buying until you find out for yourself.
BTW: BMW AG is not as helpful in determing a cars history as you might think... I suggest trying to contacting BMW GB, first.
