The same thing happened to mine (1991 850i/6spd). The car sat in the garage for three weeks while I was out of the country. When restarted it ran very rough (coughing and surging), the tachometer didn't work, and the brake warning light stayed on. After a few hours of use all problems corrected themselves completely. Apparently, it is common to have these kinds of random malfunctions due to low battery charge levels.

: My '91 850 (6sp) has been in the garage for about a week now after a problem free weekend round trip from Boston to NYC. Though the garage is no heated palace, at least it stays above freezing. Anyway, I started it up this morning not to a slightly surging idle which I expected (yeah, I know, the manifold gaskets are leaking but I'm waiting for my Dinan manifolds to arrive) but to an exceptionally rough and noisy idle. I tried flooring the gas pedal five times with the key in and the car off to try and recieve the EML code but my OBD stayed blank. Any suggestions? Am I attempting to recieve the EML codes incorrectly?

: Thanks in advance,
: Andrew Wong
