Here is my list:
1)IS IT A ONE OWNER CAR?
2)HAVE THEY GOT ***EVERY RECORD***? Have 'em fax the records!
3)GET THE VIN#, and pay the 15 bucks to run a lemon check! If the car fits the first two criteria, and the owner seems responsible and mature, the car should have been well cared for. Anyone that did not keep records on the car probably stretched the services out too far, or skipped them! (GASP!)
The E31 is an extremely complex car, get the newest, lowest mile car you can afford, and stray from the 91! 92's are a tad bit better, and 93-94 are even better, and so on. I know BMW is a fine auto, but I would never own a car that was a first year run, EVER, even if it did cost 90 g's. Just look at the nightmares with the 88 750, ouch! You can pick one of them up for less than the used engine is worth!
As far as records, not only should the car have seen all of its inspections on time, but oil changes as well. Any person who cared for their car will probably have a hefty stack of records that include lots of "little" stuff, on top of good tune ups. If there were more than two owners, and no records, you really should consider why anyone is parting with such a vehicle. If the repairs are too costly, they probably could not keep up, leaving you with a mountain of service bills to climb.
In the HEMMING MOTOR NEWS, there are appraisers in most locations. If you are serious about getting the best car for the money, a few hundred bucks to look over your favorite one is peanuts! The cost of an appraisal is nothing compared to an engine rebuild, bad tranny, even new control arms, ball joints, etc.
GOOD LUCK and be patient!!!
