Running on one bank... (archive)

I know that should the engine experience problems it can shut down one "bank" of cylinders and run on the other 6. My questions: What are some things that could prompt this? Do you feel it shut off while *cruising* along? Lastly, and this isn't really a question 'cause I'm not _that_ stupid....acceleration, especially highway passing would suck running on one bank, yeah?
Just keeping things alive here on the E31 board, and learning all I can.
