Greetings!
I've been researching the purchase of a '91 850i/6sp and was lucky enough to find this board to ask a few questions.
Some people have told me that 850's in general are a maintenance nightmare, and I'm trying to qualify if this is true. Reading through the board and the archives I don't see anything really scary (I gave up researching Jag's after seeing the posts on their boards!)
One dealer service manager told me that the V12's have a habit of blowing the "Control Unit" and they are $2k to replace. Is this the ECU or the throttle control thing and are they really $2k? Is this a DIY thing if I have medium-level backyard mechanic skills?
The car I'm looking at is a '91 6sp with 57k miles. It is charcoal with factory tinted windows and a light grey interior. Is this a rare color combo?
I'll have the car inspected by a BMW dealer, but what things should I look for in general as I'm researching the car? A quick title search shows about 3 previous owners, and since the car is at a specialty dealer (not a BMW deler or private owner) I don't expect to have any service history. I'm visiting a BMW dealer today to see if they can run service history from the VIN#.
The price of the car is a around $32k. This sounds a little high to me but I won't really try and beat them up on it until I've learned a little more about 850's in general and this car in particular. What would be a reasonable sell price? $26k?
So - any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Just comments in general regarding what to look for as I inspect the car would be terrific.
Thanks for all your help!
Steve C.
