The stock air intake system on the E31 is truly an engineering marvel. Fresh air is drawn into the front grille on each side, and goes into large "air collector" boxes on each side, which are connected via a duct which run along the top of the front bumper. The left side air collector box also supplies air to the generator. The air collector boxes connect to the air filter housing boxes with flexible rubber large diameters hoses.

Next to the cold air inlets on the front grille are the brake ducts, which direct air through the nose of the car directly at the front brake calipers.

When Jim C. dyno tuned my car, we actually lost power with K&N filters installed, compared to the stock air filters. It's hard to imagine where an alternative cold air pickup location would be if you eliminated the air collector boxes, and whether or not there would be much power to gain. But if anyone can develop an air intake system which will yield verifiable gains (rear wheel dyno testing), it's Jim C. I'll be interested to see what, if anything, he develops.
