850i Trans/Elec. Problem (archive)

I have a '92 850i with a perplexing problem. (It must be a Y2K problem 'cause it started on New Years Eve !). When driving on the freeway, after being in 4th for a few minutes, the electronic shift control dies,the "TRANS FAIL-SAFE PROG" indicator comes on, and the car goes into limp-home. This does not happen in town.

My independent has gone over it for days to no avail. There was a service bulletin concerning ground faults in the trans electronics, but we couldn't find anything. We've cleaned and greased all plugs, contacts, etc. but the problem persists.

Any clues or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
