Thanks to those who e-mailed, and yes, my batteries are less than 4 months old so I'm fairly sure it's not a voltage problem.

: I have a '92 850i with a perplexing problem. (It must be a Y2K problem 'cause it started on New Years Eve !). When driving on the freeway, after being in 4th for a few minutes, the electronic shift control dies,the "TRANS FAIL-SAFE PROG" indicator comes on, and the car goes into limp-home. This does not happen in town.

: My independent has gone over it for days to no avail. There was a service bulletin concerning ground faults in the trans electronics, but we couldn't find anything. We've cleaned and greased all plugs, contacts, etc. but the problem persists.

: Any clues or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
