Regarding maintenance records. My .02 worth. Records and upkeep are not the only good indicators of a cars condition. You may find some idiot with more money than sense (and I have heard a few here on this board) that may have done all the scheduled maintenance and keep a veritable cornicopia of records, but is out redlining it at every stop light. The car could LOOK great, but be ready to blow the engine and transmission at any moment. I have never looked at maintenance records on ANY of the cars I've ever bought (usually 1st or 2nd year used) and I have never kept a car for less than 200,000 miles folks! My '92 850i 6 spd now has 125,000 miles and I don't have any maintenance records before 54,000 miles (when I bought it). My secret? Jeez, its easy. Drive it! Look at it! Use your judgement of the person selling it from the way they look you in the eye and shake your hand. I would rather buy from an individual any day than a dealership because I want to meet the person that actually drove the car. Paint chips? I love em. Know why? That means it spent a good majority of the time on the highway. Maintenance records are about as useful as any other "statistic". Great for book learning, but we live in the real world.
