Regarding maintenance records: I use BOTH as a test of whether or not the car is worth buying. Without records, it just shows me that the owner was not responsible enough to keep them. Even if he/she drove like an old lady (and who would in an 850?), I still want to know that the oil, etc. was changed on time, and that minor/major tunes were done, too.
Regarding the fit/feel/appearance of a car: This is a great indicator of how well it was cared for, yes, but I have seen some folks who ONLY cared how the car looked. (There are the rare breed around here who live in a ten thousand dollar trailer, and drive a forty thousand dollar car.) Bimmers are strong enough to handle a bit of "service slackness," but I don't want that to come to play once I own the car!
Which brings me to my M6, and why I feel it is a worthy trade for an 850. I DARE anybody to find me an M6 this nice on the east coast! Also, I have replaced the interior, which was well worn from the previous owner. It is now an "L/M635csi." Every time I take it into the dealer to buy parts, they all come out and drool over it, even with an 850 or 840 sitting next to it. The parts-counter-guy even offered me his 911 Turbo in exchange for it! (Which, though it is worth 5 g's more, still does not float my boat like a Bimmer!) I have to be extra careful to write down the miles when I get her serviced, because even the mechanics hear the sirens crying, "Driiiiive meeeeee!" when they hop into this beast. ON SECOND THOUGHT, I'll keep it!
