1990 E31 alarm/remote entry (archive)

I recently purchased a '91 850i w/6-spd and 31K miles.
Calypso Green, Tan leather int., I LOVE IT!

It didn't come with the "switchblade" like remotes so
I ordered them... When they arrived, they wouldn't
program! I'm told by the dealer that some early
production models didn't have remote entry enabled!!!

I'm having a tough time believing that I must return
to using a key in the door. I also find it hard to
believe that BMW would sell a $77K automobile (the
flagship of the line) without remote entry!

If you have any knowledge on these topics, please
help a newbie...
