Hey Steve,
WOW a '91 SIX SPEED with only 31K miles!! A dream come true! My '92 with 100K is jealous!
Anyway, yes you have discovered an interesting technical boo-boo by BMW on the E31.
In summary (others please help me clarify this):
BMW used an infra-red remote system with the receiver "eye" placed in the front of the rear-view mirror. Apparently this system worked pretty well except that BMW was either sued or being pro-active and found that the remote window function on the E31 could hurt someone (a small child) inside the car without the owner actually being in the line-of-sight of the car. (Again I'm not sure of all the details.. this was a hot topic last year and others know more). So the result was that BMW did not activate this feature on the car.
The orginal owner of my car was told by the BMW saleman that they did not sell the remote switchblade key and with A LOT of jumping up and down, the dealer installed a Clifford alarm for free to compensate for the loss of this feature. I'm with you. $92K new for the '92 850i Six speed and.. uh sorry no remote... duh.
If you can find a Clifford remote.. I'm sure the technology has improved since '92.. you can get all the features plus more. My system has all windows up/down (front and rear) with sunroof open (good for those hot summer days). Remote lock/unlock, and when you arm it, any open item promptly closes, including the windows and sunroof... kinda cool. There are about 1 million other features as well, but I have not fooled with them.
As a question to the others out there, is there a way to link my Clifford alarm to the stock LED light on the shifter console so that it will blink etc.?
Welcome to the group! What do you like/dislike about the E31 so far??
