: WHen I start my car in cold weather the EML light remains lit and the car runs appears to run on 6 cylinders) with no power. If I warm the car up by driving it aroung the block and restarting, the light goes out and the car has power. I have a 1991, 6-spd. Anyone experience the same problem? Any suggestions?
I would take it to the dealer and have them plug in the good 'ol computer to check the DK motor diagnostics.
If you are approaching 80K+ miles than your DK motors are wearing.
Replace them in pairs so they are syncro'd together and you won't have to worry about this problem for many years/miles to come.
If you are wondering what DK motors are on the M70 engine (like I was when I first heard about them):
The DK motor are the cylinder looking objects at the front of the engine. There is one on each side of the cylinder banks. When you press the gas pedal, there is a small servo that sends information to the two ECU computers over on the left side of the engine bay. There, the computers determine fuel mixture, etc. and send that information off to the two DK motors which open and close the fuel to each bank of cylinders. Since these are electro-mechnical devices (vs. electronic non-moving parts) they wear over time. The bushings inside the electric engine physically wear down to the point of failure. The ECU controlling that DK motor will think the engine has has a cylinder fail or another problem and will shut down that bank of 6 cylinders. The EML light will come on to let you know about this "limp-home" mode.
