They don't hold their value because they are more expensive to maintain and repair by a factor of X than the 3 series. The 6 series in particular has taken a hit, due in part to the scarcity of body panels and other trim parts. 3 series parts, on the other hand, are plentiful and cheap.
The fact that you can pickup an M6, which cost $60k when it was new in '88, for around $12k if you shop hard, is almost a a crime. However, 6 series prices seem to have bottomed out recently, at least with respect to well cared for examples. There's a chance that those that are more collectible, such as the M6 and L6, may even appreciate a bit in the future (but don't hold your breath).
: ok, maybe it's just me... the six / eight series are beautiful cars, i admit my 6er isn't as sleek as the eight, but what can you do. What I don't understand is why the 3 series is holding a comparitively higher resale than older 6's and 8's... I know these are big cars compared to the 3's but the big coupes are much more unique, fun to drive and pretty scarce. I would only hope that the rest of the bimmer buying world would see this, and maybe start to push the value up on these cars so that if a little old lady drives in to me fender in a parking lot... the car won't get written off because the cost of a fender for these things is almost as much as the value of the car! at any rate I can't knock anyone for liking whatever they want... more power to you, I'm just saying don't forget about the big coupes too!
