Most maintenance costs on the 8 series (don't know on the M5 so can't comment) are related to standard service (Inspection I and II) and very common problems that are easily identified by going back and looking at the posts here. Things like seat adjustment, DK motors, manifold gaskets, thrust and control arm bushings, headlight adjustments, OBC pixels, etc. As far as reliability goes, the 12 is probably one of the most reliable due to the fact of the great amount of UNTAPPED potential power of this engine. The M's are tweaked more and as the old saying goes, "the light that burns brightest burns shortest". A lot of people here say budget 2000 dollars a year, but I say its closer to 3000 or 4000 per year due to the fact that I tend to replace ANY item that does not look showroom new in my car (headliner, felt trim, wood, leather, etc).

(127,000 miles and NO engine work to date except plugs and 1 DK motor--yeah, yeah, you're supposed to replace in pairs but I didn't and that was 77,000 miles ago and the other is still working just fine!)
: I'm thinking of buying an 850 or an E34 M5. Now to my question, how does maintenace costs and reliability compare between these two cars?
: Very grateful for answers
