I recently posted a question concerning a problem on my '92 850i automatic (76K miles, see Trans/Elec Problem post below). Well, after 3 weeks of testing and research by my local independent, we finally have solved the problem (knock wood), and I wanted to post this for the "what can go wrong" files.
We replaced the cam shaft position sensor (bank 1-6) and this cleared the problem. Now...two months ago we replaced this sensor on bank 7-12, but it had completely different symptoms. So...here is what we saw:
1st occurence: Cold start problem - one bank wouldn't start up when cold. After warming up, shut down and restart the car and everything was OK.
2nd occurence: 4th gear on freeway, sudden loss of power and "TRANS FAIL-SAFE PROG" indicated on the OBD.
Well, typical of these great (and frustrating) cars, the problem was the same in both occurences. I hope that will be all for a while as I've spent a bit much over the last year on repairs (it's not really the money, it's the time in the shop - about 6 weeks over the last 6 months).
Anyway, I hope this helps someone in the future.
