Ok, this just brings up the question, can a S70 head be fitted to the M70 block, thus making it a twin cam engine? Of course, the cost would probably be prohibitive, but condidering the cost and rarity of the CSi's it should at least be asked. In other words, are the blocks the same? As long as the cost was less than 15K-20K it would be worth it in my book since I will someday have to replace the engine or have a full overhaul and would at that time consider upgrading.
Also, what about the cost of dropping a CSi spec engine in the 850i? Anyone out there have a clue as to the viability of this?

: As someone who frequents a couple of BMW E30-oriented sites, I came across a post today that got me thinking about my fantasy vehicle, the glorious 8 series. Someone was asking if there was a way to turn a single-cam M20 ("baby six") E30 engine into a twin-cam. I responded by suggesting that the M70/S70 V-12 in the 8 series may be based on the combination of two M20 blocks, just as the Porsche V-8 is based on two 944 blocks. If that were true, I thought it might be hypothetically possible (albeit prohibitively complicated and ruinously expensive) to fit the cylinder head from a twin-cam CSi to an M20 block.
: However, after reading through a few posts here, it appears I may have been mistaken. So my question is, is the S70 a single- or twin-cam engine? The second one is, does anyone know if indeed the 850 V-12s are based on M20 blocks? Any input would be appreciated (and, please, no flames about my comparatively pedestrian E30).
: BTW: I'm sincere in my use of the term "envious." I've been in love with the 8 series since I first saw one. I even toyed with the idea of buying a used '91 six-speed a couple of years ago, but put the idea on hold when it occurred to me what a waste it would be to own one in Hawaii (we don't exactly have long expanses of open road). Having said that, my I make a request of all of you? Please, take care of yours -- I'm sure I'll be in the market for one if I ever move back to the mainland.
