Help! EML light and spark plugs black (archive)

I have an 850i 1991. My EML turns on and the car goes into limp-mode. Usually I would let the car run, shut it off and restart it and it would be fine. Now I am having trouble starting it. I put in new plugs. Still the same and now the plugs are black. It appears the the computer is sending out too much gas and not being burned?

Any comments or suggestions?
