The following site has a fairly good description of the M60 engine problem and the car years involved. A lot of 540's have come on the market soon after having the engines replaced under warranty since they can state the have new engines.

: Does the 1994 840ci have the same block as the 1994-95 540? The 540 had a nickel-silicone alloy block that was subject to break down under high sulpher US fuels. They replaced it late in 95 with an aluminum-silicone alloy block. Anyone have any answers?
