Jeff: I'm far from an E30 expert, but I have spent considerable time behind the wheel of an E30 powered by the so-called "eta" engine and I have to say that there are some similarities between the way that car drove and the way my 1991 850i drives. I realize that the eta powerplant was reviled by many Bimwads as an "economy engine." But like the M70B50, it made lots and lots of torque at very low revs and around town the E30 felt very fast. Moreover, just like in my 850i, the eta engine was mated to rather tall gearing so that at freeway speeds the engine was loafing along. One big difference though: my old E30 got 30+ mpg out on the highway.
