: I have an 850i 1991. My EML turns on and the car goes into limp-mode. Usually I would let the car run, shut it off and restart it and it would be fine. Now I am having trouble starting it. I put in new plugs. Still the same and now the plugs are black. It appears the the computer is sending out too much gas and not being burned?

It's possible that the intake manifold gaskets are leaking. This causes too much air to get into the intake charge and the software tries to compensate by richening the mixture. Intake manifold gasket leaks are common on E31s as they age. Usually the first sign is rough idle when the car is first started after a very cold night.
