Is there a service manual for the 850?
Thanks in advance, davew

Kind of.

For a while you could get the paper copy of the original, model year 1990 850 repair manual. It's pretty good, but contains only information specific to the E31. About $175 USD. The hardcopy manual does not contain engine or transmission repair information. That was available on microfiche. About $35 USD. Finally, there's the 600-page hardcopy Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (ETM), which is model year specific. About $175 USD.

BMW's been moving toward CD-ROM for dissemination of technical information. The are three CDs you'll need:

1) ETK - Parts list CD - about $50 USD
2) TIS - Technical data CD - about $135 USD
3) ETM - ETM on CD - about $35 USD

The CDs contain information for all model years and most makes. Sadly the CD I own don't have much information on the M70 E31, and only limited information on the M60, M62 and M73 engines.

BMW distributes their technical CDs thru Kent-Moore here in the States. Give them a call at (800) 328-6657.
