Steve,

Yes, I agree it is not advisable to run the tank dry and I never let it get below a half a tank and keep the tank topped off for the most part unless I am on the road. What I meant by my posting was that if I am driving and the tank goes down even as little as a quarter of a tank from full it builds up a large vacuum. I believe the tank should be venting to the outside and not building up the vacuum. I am trying to determine if the vacuum is caused by a blocked vent tube or a blocked charcoal canister, but thanks for the response.

: : When I run the gas tank down below a half a tank (in city driving that seems to be about 50 miles---just joking) does everyone else experience a strong vacuum buildup in the gas tank? Surely that can't be good for the fuel pumps? If this is not normal would this indicate a clogged return line or clogged charcoal cannister (or even perhaps both). I would appreciate any and all comments.

: : Also, P.M.B., could you please e-mail the seat cable fix to me? Thanks in advance....

: Jim, I have the almost the same car.....1991.

: The fuel pumps are submerged in the gas tank. A BMW mechanic told me that the pumps are cooled by the gasoline. It was his experience that people who ran their tanks consistantly down to almost nothing.......consistantly had fuel pump problems. VERY expensive to replace.
