Myself, I find that I don't use the M setting much at all. With the switch setting to A, and the shift lever in 3rd (or S3), the Dinan chipset allows me to go almost to redline in 1st and 2nd with my foot to the floor, so pulling away from a stop is pretty quick. This mode is supposed to be only 1st - 3rd gear (as I understand it). I've also noticed that if I'm in Drive (ED) on the freeway and switch to M mode, the car downshifts to 3rd (but I haven't explored this much to see if it's just speed/shift point settings with the Dinan chips).

: (S)port ... 10%
: (E)conomy ... 75%
: (M)anual ... 15%
: (E)conomy mode seems to be quick enough. I like using (M)anual mode to motivate the car off the line. I use (S)port mode to get home after a particularly frustrating day at work.
: The only experience I have with (A)utomatic mode, is in a friend's E32. So far is I could tell, it seems to a have an attitude very similar to the (E)conomy mode.
: My question...
: People keep mentioning (S)port mode only operates in up to third gear in the 4-spd transmissions. I have found that to be true of (M)anual mode, as well. However, when I am cruising in 4th and click the switch to (S)port mode, the car does NOT downshift to third, but happily stays in 4th. However, in (S)port Mode I have found that the kickdown point comes much earlier and the shift points are slightly higher... but it doesn't force a downshift to third, like switching to (M)anual mode does. Does everyone's transmission force them to third if they switch over to (S)port mode while cruising in 4th?
: I have to admit... there is a nearly night & day difference between the (S)port mode and (E)conomy mode, though.
