Just a guess......having gone through this a couple of times. Your fuel pump(s) are probably going south.
Make sure that you never let your tank go below the half way mark as the fuel actually cools the fuel pumps. A quick fix, (if it is the pumps), and you are limping home. Bang on the fuel tank (passenger side) with the heel of your hand as hard as you can. This brutal act will sometimes be enough to get you home or to a dealer to get new pumps installed. (NEVER install just one.)

: Guys,

: I need to find out who in America knows our complicated computer systems best. I live in Dallas and the best shop here in the metroplex admits that the dealerships aren't much help and it is nearly impossible to get help from BMW-NA on the E31. There are so few well trained mechanics, and there is so little compiled info on common breakdowns. I have what must be a simple problem in my '91 but no one can diagnose the exact problem (intermittent limp-home.) I am giving the shop one more chance to find it and then I am going statewide or even nationwide. PLEASE tell me if you know a true expert on E31 electronics or if you are one yourself. Any help is truly appreciated!
