Apologies,
In an earlier post I mis-led: my limp home problem was the cam shaft position sensors (the mechanic had written "pulse generator sensor" originally on the repair ticket). Since replacing both, I've had no problems.

Head gasket leak is a PITA if you do it yourself. Most of the work is OK, until you have to tighten the last few manifold bolts. I'm sure the mechanics have some special tools to get into the tight space that's available. If you're not equiped with the right tools, have a pro do it. Cost will depend on your area and mechanic. You can sometimes find an intake leak by squirting ether starting spray judiciously around the intake manifold area. Go slowly to let the last bit of ether evaporate before spraying again. If the car suddenly increases idle RPM, then you'll have found a leak. Be careful, and only do this in a well ventilated area. This is not a gauranteed method, but usually you can eliminate gasket leak this way.
