Why don't you take the car to a real dealership. You say "best shop here in the metroplex admits that the dealerships aren't much help." Have you actually taken the car to the dealership? Most aftermarket shops will have no idea how to work on this vehicle. Take your car to the Dealership! As I was a BMW technician for 9 years I can assure you the dealership knows a bit more than Joe's garage about your car.
Steve's post could be a possible answer, but only one of many. Your post did not really give enough information to make a reliable diagnosis. Once again, take your car to someone who knows it.
