I just took delivery yesterday(3/2) of a blind transaction e31. A 91 w/30K miles. Dealer gave me name of previous owner(I called), I did the carfax deal(interesting), looked at photos(a passable photog can hide a lot, a professional is Satan himself!), but I think what helped me most is that I had the dealer take a wireless phone out to the car, then we conducted a walkaround with me asking questions, and him reporting his observations. Kinda hard to lie or have "convenient memory loss" while doing this.
BTW, dealer is Premier SportsCars in Springfield, MO. I recommend them highly. They delivered a car right to my front door that is so beautiful, my neighbor thought it was a 2000 model!
IMHO, I wouldn't count on the CPO status to make it a desireable car.
