850I rear axil ratios (archive)

A 91 850 I 6 speed has a 2.65 rear axil ratio. This is not the best for acceleration, and I will not be driving over 150. Has anyone had experiance changing rear axil ratios. USED diff's are about $600, while gear sets from Korman and Dinan are about $3000. Can the differential from an auto transmission be used in the 6 speed. Any help will be welcome.
