Thanks Steve. My next purchase is indeed going to be the lit shifter. I'm looking forward to the increase in horsepower! ;-)

: The needed part number is 25 11 2 227 662. The E31 shifter knob/boot is a one piece assembly. In order to reuse the boot, you need to trim it from the knob using a razor blade, and cutting has high on possible on the knob, while still being able to remove the boot. With the boot removed, you replace the knob with the illuminated knob, and wire it into the cigarette light wiring, which is immediately behind it. Then, you install the boot upside down and inside out over the knob. Leaving a small amount of leather boot (like maybe half an inch), take a big tie-wrap and clamp the boot to the shift lever. Once it is securely clamped, you can then turn it right side out and snap the platic base back into place.

: Frankly, I have no idea why the 6-speed E31's weren't given an illuminated shifter from the factory, but this is an easy upgrade and is a nice touch in the E31's superb cockpit. Phil S. and I both have done this conversion. Probably added 2 or 3 HP to the car ;-)
