Is anybody out there interested in forming a parts rotation group? Here is what I have in mind: I just purchased a pair of intake manifolds from Patrick Jackson for $400.00 (very cheap considering ~$1,700.00 from BMW including gaskets).
I am going to have them Extrude Honed and then (possibly…waiting for more information to arrive in the mail) send them to Jet Hot to have them silver coated on the outside only. Extrude Hone is going to take 3 to 4 weeks in house plus delivery times. Jet Hot wants a week in house plus delivery times.
By purchasing the intakes from Patrick I have reduced the down time for my car from roughly 8 weeks (assuming no over night shipping) to about 1 day in the shop.
I have promised to sell my intakes from my car to Patrick for $400.00 when I have completed the project. When Patrick is complete he will have a set of intakes available for someone else to buy for $400.00 (assuming he agrees to this…I have not spoke to him).
I was thinking of organizing all of us with spare parts together in order to minimize down time. As an example, I would be interested in purchasing a set of exhaust manifolds to have the same thing done to them. If people just have this stuff just sitting in their garage (like all of my original Harley engine and exhaust parts), we could put them into “circulation” and all win. I would hope that if there are people out there with exhaust manifolds to offer, there may be something of interest in the “stockpile” for them. Could be a win-win for everyone.
I am in the idea stage at the moment, but would be willing to build a database to track everything and moderate the transactions. As an example, if when I am complete with the intake work Patrick is still a ways out from actually doing the intakes on his car (we could set time restrictions), the intakes would go on lottery. The lucky individual would complete the work to the intakes and offer up their spares to the group with Patrick getting right of first refusal at that point. If he is ready then he gets them, if not, back to the lottery.
Please let me know how you guys feel about this…
Thanks,
