E38 rear axle use on E31 (archive)

I was reading your messages about the rear diff change. The 740 and the 840 shares a lot of drivetrain parts such as engine, transmission, etc. The difference between the rear diff. gear ratio is big enough to think about swapping them. 2.93 (840) v. 3.15 (740) I heard about the rear cover and mounting points differents between the E32 and E31. Will I have the same problem with the E38 rear diff too? Is it really a bolt-on install besides the rear cover or there is some high tech tool and knowledge needed to do a proper work ?
