All e31's, automatic and manual, appear to share a common differential casing. As noted, covers and input shafts may vary, but can easily be changed.

Regarding the e31 automatic's, the following ratios are in BMW's Parts System as factory standard:

840i 4spd auto: 2.93
840ci 5spd auto: 2.81
850i 4spd auto: 3.64
850ci 5spd auto: 2.81

The early e32 750 used a 3.15 and later (7/90) a 3.64 ratio, without manual transmissions offered.
