I just traded a late model 500SL for a 96 840ci. Both in my opinion share a great heritage. The SL in my opinion was a little more responsive from the get-go. But one of the line, I find my 840 to be everybit a driver as the SL. I think you need to look at the trade-offs, The 840 is more practical in my opinion. At least you have some room to load some small parcels in the rear or seat a child (can't do it in the SL). The trunk space in the 840 is better as well (hey you get the ski bag!). Seriously, it depends on what you really want / need. As both offer high-end performance. The convert. top is nice if you use it. I believe someone earlier mentioned the e31's unique stature? That is something else to consider. I live in northern virginia and every third car on the bloody road is a merc! Dare to be different...
