First, isn't annoying that a 100K car doesn't have an oil pressure or temperature gauge? BMW's flat wrong in their approach the OBC will give sufficient advance notice. I like to watch a needle creep across a gauge face indicating imminent destruction, rather than just a message indicating "Your engine's about 95% fried".

If there was a serious oil pressure loss, wouldn't the hydraulic lash compensators/lifters drain back, creating a hellavu racket? Also, the camshaft chain tensioner would "roll off", permitting you to hear the symphonic noises of the chain rattling around inside the front cover.
